Casbah Guided Tour
History of Algiers
Algiers has a history that stretches back more than 2,000 years. Originally founded by the Phoenicians as a trading settlement, the city later became part of the Roman Empire, where it was known as Icosium. Traces of this ancient Roman presence can still be found in parts of the city and its surroundings.
In the 16th century, Algiers became an important center of the Ottoman Empire in North Africa. During this period, the historic Casbah of Algiers was developed — a maze of narrow streets, mosques, and palaces that today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the city’s rich heritage.
In 1830, France invaded Algeria and made Algiers the capital of its colony. The city expanded with wide boulevards and European-style architecture, including landmarks such as the Grand Post Office of Algiers.
